The key of A minor is the relative minor key to C major, and the key of C major is the relative major key to A minor. Since A natural minor and C major are comprised of the same notes in the same order, you would expect them to feel closely related, and indeed they do. But that also makes for a lot of musical variety. The minor-key world is more complicated than the major-key world. I prefer to call it natural minor.īut this is only one of several minor scales in widespread use. It has a few different names: the A diatonic minor scale, the A natural minor scale, or A Aeolian mode. If you play the white keys over a droning or repeated A, you get a very different-sounding scale. The white keys on the piano don’t just have to play C major. I wrote this explainer for my New School students maybe you will find it useful too.
